Egg crate technology is only used to make toppers and pads, not mattresses. Since we can't accurately compare a pad to a mattress we decided to compare egg crate pads to memory foam toppers. Some interesting findings resulted from this comparison and we're eager to share them with you.
But first, here's what you must know about home mattress trials and what makes a good foam mattress.
A pad (or topper) is a 2 to 10" thick layer made of foam, down, magnetic stripes or other materials, that goes on top of a mattress in order to offer extra cushioning, insulation, support or protection to the person sleeping on it.
Memory foam pads are made of open cells, billions of balloons with holes in them. When you sit on it, air moves from one cell to another and the topper contours your body in a unique fashion, relieving pressure points and supporting your weight.
With regular foam pads, which are made of closed cells, the air in the compressed cells pushes back against you causing pressure points which constricts circulation at the area of contact. The result is discomfort and even pain over time. When you lie on a visco memory topper there is no air left in the cells to push back and cause discomfort. The air is spread to adjoining cells and the foam simply 'melts' under you to provide balanced support and comfort.
When you first take delivery, it will smell a bit plasticy at first, but it is not a strong odor, and it fades away in 3 days. It is kind of like new car smell, or, new carpet smell, or, if you get a new big toy that comes in a big box with styrofoam, it is not offensive and it goes away.
I can roll up the egg crate and take it with me when I'm out of town. I've slept on friend's and relative's beds without the egg crate and with it, and it sure makes for a more pleasant visit. I love my egg crate. Still can't sleep properly, but at least I'm comfy.
My wife now sleeps through the entire night. It did not heal her back, it just provides great support to assist her in obtaining a good night's sleep. The material forms/molds to the body like a parent holding an infant child.
The only advantage of an egg crate design is a weight savings -- a non-issue in beds.

A Critical Eye On The Latest Mattress Technologies
What affects the expected lifetime of memory mattress toppers and does a Tempur-Pedic topper last longer? The answer is years and years as long as it's made of better quality, higher-density foam.
Many manufacturers claim memory faom was first used by the NASA Space Program to boost sales for their memory bedding.
NASA never did use that basic material in the 1960s. NASA matress or space matress technology simply does not exist as such.
The truth is the Swedish Tempur-Pedic company did eventually come up with a reliable formula now used in the best-selling Tempurpedic mattresses.
While Tempur-Pedic Swedish mattresses are commonly known as Swedish mattreses, not all such products made in Sweden are made of slow rise foam.
How can you check if your purchase as good as a real Tempur-Pedic bed? You can try the wine glass test, the egg test, or the fridge test on your visco elastic memory foam bed.
